Note: We would have liked to feature Mortal Kombat but we didn’t get the screener and as we are based in Switzerland, Stowaway is inaccessible to us due to rights issues!

Shadow and Bone

WHY

This new fantasy series from Netflix is an adaptation of the books by Leigh Bardugo. It takes us into a world at war cut in two by a dark strip of land called the Fold! The expeditions that dare to pass through it take great risks because it is populated by terrifying creatures. The first episode will show us that in a great way! The story follows the adventure of a young orphan girl and her childhood friend. Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) will prove to be the chosen one as she can summon the light and potentially put an end to the Fold. She becomes a target for some and a saint for others. In particular for the Grisha, who are a kind of magician who can manipulate the elements to their liking and especially for their leader, the Darkling, who will take Alina under his wing. The universe is strongly inspired by Russia culture through the different names but also the style of decorations and costumes. This brings a really cool refreshing side! The series follows many characters in different places of this world and covering different positions in society, of course Alina and her mentor, but also her friend, a soldier, and a group of bandits. Their destinies will intersect in a major episode that will be rich in revelations and will set the stage for the end of this first season that promises to be epic! If you like fantasy series filled with magic and mystery, then don’t miss Shadow and Bone!

WHAT

Based on Leigh Bardugo’s worldwide bestselling Grishaverse novels, Shadow and Bone finds us in a war-torn world where lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is torn from everything she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. But as she struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be one and the same and that nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. There are dangerous forces at play, including a crew of charismatic criminals, and it will take more than magic to survive.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier – One World, One People

WHY

Get ready for an intense episode that will start with an action sequence of almost 20 minutes! We discover the mysterious contents of the briefcase offered by the Wakandans, the black Captain America suit! And Sam uses it wonderfully, especially during an excellent aerial pursuit sequence with a helicopter but also during close combat. His shield throwing training in the previous episode served him well! This episode also marks the return of Sharon, whose true and shocking identity will be revealed, but also John Walker who comes to settle his accounts with Karli Morgenthau to avenge the death of his friend and what a pleasure to see him later as US Agent. Karli, is for us, the only negative point of this series, her speech is rather caricatural and her lack of charisma make her quickly unbearable. Her cause finds a much better ambassador in the person of Sam! And he will prove it through his sublime final speech! Another really touching moment is the new meeting with Sam and Isaiah and its rehabilitation in the history of America. In the end, this series is much more interesting than the first trailers suggested. Especially with the difficulty of coming out after the very successful WandaVision series. The themes are very interesting and the scenes between Bucky and Sam are really nice to follow and we really hope to see this duo again soon! As any Marvel production, don’t miss the post-credits scene!

WHAT

Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka The Falcon, and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier. The pair, who came together in the final moments of “Avengers: Endgame,” team up on a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience.
