This week is a bit quieter with still an excellent Netflix documentary (Fear City: New York vs the Mafia) and an HBO anthology (Room 104 – Season 4). As it’s quiet, we invite you to check our selection of last week which was very dense!

You can still have a longer list of the releases under the “This Friday” section on the homepage.

Fear City: New York vs the Mafia

WHY

If New York and the Mafia are topics that interest you then Fear City is not to be missed. The documentary offers you an exciting three-part dive into the New York of the 70s and 80s through a wide variety of quality archives footage. We learn how the 5 Mafia families were organized and how the FBI developed plans to bring down this organization. The many interviews are filled with very interesting anecdotes (the cable guy) and sometimes terrifying when they give the mic to old mafia members. You won’t see the time going by thanks to a very dynamic editing and a beautiful soundtrack. Our only regret is that the series has only three episodes.

WHAT

Throughout the 1970s and ’80s, the “Five Families” of the New York mafia—Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese and Luccese—held a powerful, and seemingly insurmountable, grip on the city.

Room 104 – Season 4

WHY

With this fourth season of Room 104, the Duplass Brothers anthology is coming to an end. The series touches on many themes and styles such as sitcom, cartoon and even action. We will especially remember two excellent episodes, the first one with a touching Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) and a very inventive filmmaking. And the second one is a kind of crazy tribute to Conan the Barbarian, very funny, with its dose of action and the one of the only episode to take us out of the famous room. We also really enjoyed the Hamster.

WHAT

An anthology series set in a single hotel room, where every guest who comes to stay reveals a unique set of circumstances and quirks. From the Duplass Brothers.
