The month of May was again a month full of really cool movies and series not to be missed! We have prepared a small selection of our favorites for you!

Army of the Dead

WHY

Fans of director Zack Snyder are delighted with the beginning of this year 2021, in the space of a few months, they can enjoy two films of their favorite director and in two very different styles. After Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the director comes back to his first love, the zombies, with his long awaited Army of the Dead for which he signs, in addition to directed it, also the story and the beautiful cinematography! The film opens in a very spectacular way with its credits sequence and its presentation of a part of the team. This one will be led by Dave Bautista (seen in Guardians of the Galaxy) and composed in great part of hotheads, at the same time it is necessary to accept such a crazy suicidal mission. The casting is very well done and the characters all have a good reason to return to Las Vegas. After this introduction sequence rich in explosions, zombies and violent death, the rhythm of the film calms down and takes its time to introduce us to each member of the team but also to the American society that has become accustomed to living with zombies and the authoritarian drifts that this can bring. The film takes the opportunity to make a parallel with the current world situation of Covid, of course without the nuclear bomb final solution. After an excellent sequence of explanation of the plan, the team is back in Las Vegas and will discover that the zombies are not all slow and stupid. We discover the alphas and how they are organized and instead of going for the kill, our team will play it smart even if it’s a bit questionable on how to do it. From that moment on, the film offers us inventive and intense sequences such as the zombies hibernating or the use of zombies to trigger traps! It is also the time to discover the iconic zombie tiger, Valentine. She will have an anthology sequence by “playing” with one of the characters. The human or zombie women are not just a sidekick and will really play an important role in the story. The action is almost non-stop in the last act and Zack Snyder offers us, as usual, many iconic and striking shots, many of them will be obviously in… slow-motion! His new film is the perfect entertainment to watch for a great evening!

WHAT

Following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.

Cruella

WHY

After a first successful test with Maleficent to show us the origins of the most iconic villains of their universe, Disney offers us today to discover those of Cruella. The casting is really perfect with the beautiful Emma Stone (La La Land) accompanied by her “family”, Joel Fry (Yesterday) and Paul Walter Hauser (Richard Jewell), but also Emma Thompson (Love Actually) who is absolutely great in her role of villain without forgetting Mark Strong (Kingsman: The Golden Circle)! Emma plays both sides of her character’s personality, Estella and Cruella, very well. The story is really touching and has its share of surprises and revelations! It also avoids any unnecessary cliché, good feelings or romance. The relation of Emma and her family works really well and they are really funny to watch especially when their dogs are part of their robbery plans. The direction of Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) is very pleasant and airy, especially through long continuous shots such as the one that shows us the Liberty store in London. The first appearances of Cruella are also very inventive and very well filmed, it is a real pleasure to discover them. The film is a true festival for the eyes with its countless costumes and stylish and extravagant dresses as well as the beauty of the different sets. All this is accompanied by an excellent soundtrack with a lot of cult songs! Stay tuned until the end to enjoy the sublime end credits and be sure to don’t miss the post-credits scene!

WHAT

Academy Award® winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) stars in Disney’s “Cruella,” an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. “Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

Jupiter’s Legacy

WHY

In 2017, Netflix announced the acquisition of Millarworld, founded by comic-book writer Mark Millar, who wrote Wanted and Kick Ass. This first collaboration starts very well with the adaptation of Jupiter’s Legacy! The story offers us to follow aging superheroes who will have to deal with super-villains and also with the young generation that challenges their code. This one forbids them to kill whereas their opponents will not deprive themselves, thus bringing very violent and gory deaths in particular in an epic fight sequence in the first episode! We witness an interesting generation conflict as the world changes. The series will often switch back and forth between the past and the present, showing us how the first superheroes acquired their powers while the younger ones had them from birth. These sequences in the past are really exciting, showing The Wall Street Crash of 1929 and its consequences on the population and on the hero’s family that will then led to an exciting quest to a mysterious island. It is interesting to note that these heroes have no idea that they are going to inherit superpowers and this story is very reminiscent of adventure films such as King Kong and others. But the sequences in the present are just as interesting to follow with the dilemmas that plague the old and young superheroes and the example they must set for the world. The difference between the two children of the leading superhero couple is very well set up and shows how they approach this difficult situation in a really different way. As usual with Millar, things are not black and white but with many shades of grey and this will bring a lot of cool surprises. Even if you’re not a big fan of comic books, the themes should appeal to you so be sure to watch this excellent series!

WHAT

After nearly a century of keeping mankind safe, the world’s first generation of superheroes must look to their children to continue the legacy. But tensions rise as the young superheroes, hungry to prove their worth, struggle to live up to their parents’ legendary public reputations — and exacting personal standards.

Love, Death + Robots – Volume 2

WHY

The first season of the animated anthology Love, Death + Robots, created by Tim Miller, was really excellent! We couldn’t wait to see this new season and we can tell you right away, you won’t be disappointed! The series continues to explore visual styles, from cartoon animation to stop motion to stunning photo-realistic look. The art direction is simply sublime and some of the images and shots will stay in your brain for a long time! The stories will be just as different in their subject matter with sometimes a contemplative approach, black humour or more profound themes such as immortality and overpopulation. Each director brought their own vision and rhythm, Tim Miller is back on the director chair too for one episode. Throughout this new season, we will often travel through the galaxy but also on Earth at different times. A little advice, avoid watching it with your children, because even if it is animation, the stories and the violence are for an adult audience. This new season is a real success and we can only encourage you to watch it this weekend!

WHAT

LOVE, DEATH + ROBOTS is a blast of the future with its roots deep in the past. Show creator Tim Miller teamed up with director David Fincher after years of wanting to make adult animated features and short films at his animation house Blur Studio. When his directorial debut DEADPOOL hit big, they saw their opportunity and the anthology series found a natural home at Netflix. “We couldn’t have been happier at the response to the show,” recalls Miller, of the excitement around season one and the appetite for more. “It was exactly the kind of passionate reception from animation fans David and I hoped for, but for many long years had been told wouldn’t happen.” For season two Miller was joined by Jennifer Yuh Nelson as Supervising Director. The Oscar-nominated director has vast animation experience – having worked in the industry for years and helmed Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3. Together they sought talented and diverse animation directors from around the world, for a blend of styles and stories ranging from violent comedy to existential philosophy. “It’s a tonal and stylistic Jenga game,” says Jennifer Yuh Nelson, “Trying to figure out which director might best handle what story.”

Mythic Quest – Season 2

WHY

What a pleasure to see the crazy Mythic Quest team again! And they are all in great shape starting with Ian (Rob McElhenney) who still has so much charisma and ego but who will also be very touching. The topic of this new season is the launch of a new extension for their game. And as you can imagine, this is going to be much more complicated than expected especially with the war of egos in the management team and especially between Ian and Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao). This will lead to some really funny sequences such as Poppy’s erotic dream with Ian. This duo works wonderfully and they almost function as a married couple with all that can imply. As in its first season, all departments will be treated in the scenario, showing a great variety of points of view on this specific world and on the world of work. The series also integrates the global crisis of Covid with characters who regret not working in remote anymore while others are very happy that some colleagues are in remote! Little advice, watch the credits because most of the episodes have a sequence at this time.

WHAT

With the quarantine finally over, the new season of “Mythic Quest” finds everyone back in the office (well, almost everyone), attempting to build upon the success of Raven’s Banquet by launching an epic new expansion, but Ian (Rob McElhenney) and the newly promoted co-creative director, Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao), struggle with the game’s direction. Meanwhile, C.W. (F. Murray Abraham) reconciles some unresolved issues from his past, the testers (Ashly Burch and Imani Hakim) test the bounds of an office romance, and David (David Hornsby) loses yet another woman in his life as Jo (Jessie Ennis) leaves him to assist Brad (Danny Pudi).

Oxygen

WHY

For his new film, the French director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) offers us to be locked in a mysterious pod with Melanie Laurent (6 Underground). After a very intense and oppressive opening sequence, she will then do everything to try to get out of this pod and especially to understand why and how she ended up in there. If you are claustrophobic, hang on because the film takes place almost entirely inside the pod except for some flashback sequences. Fortunately, the direction is very inventive and multiplies the interesting shots and one does not get bored for a second. This is also due to the quality of the script and the interpretation of Mélanie Laurent and Mathieu Amalric (Le Bureau des Légendes) who lends his soothing voice to the AI, M.I.L.O! The film will be very rich in revelations and surprises, we can’t tell you more to prevent any spoilers that will ruin the fun. If you are looking for an entertaining and interesting movie, then take a deep breath and go for it!

WHAT

Oxygen is a French survival thriller directed by Alexandre Aja. The film tells the story of a young woman (Mélanie Laurent, 6 Underground, Inglourious Basterds), who wakes up in a cryogenic pod.
