The Devil All The Time

WHY

Get ready for a journey deep into Ohio through several time periods with The Devil All The Time. The film, directed by Antonio Campos, is an adaptation of the book of the same name and is led by a very impressive cast especially with Tom Holland , Robert Pattinson and Jason Clarke. The story cleverly interweaves the characters’ fates to achieve a majestic finale. Each of the characters is really well developed and the Father-Son ark is really interesting with sins and bad luck. Religion has a poor image especially through the character of the pastor (Robert Pattinson). Pattinson is really a scenes stealer, he is really impressive and terrifying at the same time. Tom Holland shows us a very interesting aspect in his interpretation at the opposite of Spider-Man. In spite of a rather long runtime (138 min), the story doesn’t leave much room for down time thanks to its various characters and its masterful editing. The tension during the last act, a rise in violence, will give you no break until the end credits!

WHAT

In Knockemstiff, Ohio and its neighboring backwoods, sinister characters — an unholy preacher (Robert Pattinson), twisted couple (Jason Clarke and Riley Keough), and crooked sheriff (Sebastian Stan) — converge around young Arvin Russell (Tom Holland) as he fights the evil forces that threaten him and his family. Spanning the time between World War II and the Vietnam war, director Antonio Campos’ THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME renders a seductive and horrific landscape that pits the just against the corrupted.

The Third Day

WHY

When you read the pitch of The Third Day about Jude Law on an island you think of a magical trip and white sand, but it will be the exact opposite! The island in question is connected to the UK by a single road which is mostly submerged by the tide. The aerial shots showing this road are absolutely magnificent, they look almost like paintings. And Jude Law’s character will soon realise that the island is much more mysterious and dangerous than it seems, as is its population. This mini-series, produced by HBO and Sky, is divided in two parts, making the construction of the story very interesting. The “Summer” part focuses on the character of Jude Law who will soon be confronted with extraordinary violence, horror and madness. The cinematography in this part is really sublime, playing with warm colours and depth of field. The second part “Winter” with Naomie Harris is more painful largely because of her character who is irritating and hysterical. Fortunately this improves as her ark story started to fit with “Summer”. Let’s just point out that we haven’t seen the last episode. Apart from this small reserve, the trip on this island is not to be missed!

WHAT

The show is divided into two parts: “Summer” and “Winter.” In “Summer,” one man (The New Pope’s Jude Law) visits a mysterious island off the British coast and discovers a group of inhabitants intent on preserving their home at any cost. In the second half, aka “Winter,” a strong-willed outsider (Moonlight’s Naomie Harris) comes to the island seeking answers — but instead causes a battle to decide its fate.
